What’s it like seeing the GP about mental health?

If you’re able to explain at the beginning of the appointment that you want to talk about mental health, the GP might ask you a few questions. These may cover:

  • your physical health (e.g. are you sleeping and eating properly? Have you been really tired or had headaches?)

  • any support you might have (e.g. who else you might have to talk to about things?)

Shane really liked the GP he saw about anxiety and depression. She was very informal and understanding.

Siobhan felt nervous the first time she talked to a doctor about mental health. It can be hard to open up, but going with someone helped.
